What To Fish For In Asheville?
Trout Fishing: Let’s start off by talking about fly fishing. WNC is probably best known for it’s world class fly fishing rivers. There are roughly around 10 main rivers in close proximity to the Asheville, NC area that are all full of trout. While there are many different regulations, pertaining to each stream and separate sections of the the stream, you will be able to catch rainbow, brown and brook trout consistently through the spring, summer and fall months.
Some rivers are heavily stocked in the spring and fall, while others remain wild. These wild portions of the rivers are delicate and are usually best during the summer months. Most rivers have a single hook, artificial only regulation. So if you decide to fish a river in the Asheville area and are unsure how it’s regulated, make sure to follow this rule. This will keep you out of trouble if the game warden approaches you.

Smallmouth Drift Fishing: Smallmouth trips are primarily done in a drift boat or an outfitted raft. These trips begin March 1st, and end early November. Smallmouth fishing is excellent due to our bigger rivers like the French Broad and Nolichucky River having an abundance of aquatic insects and baitfish present in them. During the spring months you will find larger fish eating crawfish and then switching to a minnow diet in the early summer months. Most smallmouth fishing trips in Asheville are best completed with the use of a spinning rod and conventional lures, rather than fly fishing.
A Float Trip Fishing Guide To North Carolina Mountains
Trout Float Trips: Our trout float trips are seasonal here in North Carolina. Where March – May and October – December are the best months to catch trout by drifting down the river with a guide. The most popular river for drifting is the Tuckasegee River in Sylva/Bryson City areas. With more trout per mile than any river in WNC, it is always a blast. Anglers can catch rainbow, brown and brook trout all day long with the use of a fly rod or spinning tackle.
Musky Float Trips: While musky may not be an easy fish to catch, the prize can be very rewarding! Coined the fish of 10,000 casts, the muskellunge is a mean predator that will chase big 8 inch lures, or long 10 inch streamers. Commonly known for their sharp teeth, these predators are not a fish that you want to chase if you are looking to catch fish all day. These types of fishing trips are more or less known as a ‘hunt’.
